Evidence-Based Medicine: What is it? Why Should We Care?

Understand why Evidence-Based Medicine is important and learn when and how it can be applied.

What is the best medical approach to Covid-19 or other diseases? In today’s highly charged environments, there is often uncertainty in what the “best” medical approaches are, and it can be difficult to have confidence in some authorities’ assertions. The diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of disease is inherently imprecise, in many cases. Therefore, the backdrop of some conventional and social media communications increases the magnitude of uncertainty about current medical best practices and future potential advances.

Evidence based medicine is an important strategy for improving patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness. We will be discussing evidence-based medicine as a strategy for evaluating the quality and impact of clinically-based research, and how it interfaces with patient values and clinical judgment. Our discussion will emphasize understanding how the quality of a clinical study influences the degree of confidence that we can have in the results and interpretations, and how this can affect desired clinical outcomes. We will also be providing context for why Evidence-Based Medicine is important and some of the criticisms of this approach. Our goal is for you to:

  • Understand why Evidence-Based Medicine is a needed complement to conventional approaches
  • Understand how the value of clinical research is assessed in Evidence-Based Medicine approaches
  • Understand the context for when and how Evidence-Based Medicine can be applied
