Empowering future life science innovators with hands-on research experiences and training programs.
The 2024 STEM Summer Research Experience provides college students with first-hand experience in immuno-oncology laboratories. By enhancing their cell culture and molecular biology techniques, students can hone their research skills to prepare for a career in biotech.
Admission will be offered on a rolling basis until cohorts are filled.
Students apply laboratory techniques commonly used in biological research. Students will perform aseptic and molecular biology techniques to culture, label, and image mammalian cells.
Learn how biologists use viruses in the development of therapeutics and vaccines. Students will perform hands-on molecular biology techniques to analyze the effects of viral infections on protein synthesis.
Explore the emerging technologies and applications of MedTech devices using computer-aided design, 3-D printing, and material testing. Students will design, build, and test a MedTech device.
This 1-day course introduces the fundamental principles, sample preparation, experimental controls, and data analysis of flow cytometry. Trainees will gain hands-on flow cytometry experience with industry-standard instruments, reagents, application, and software analysis. Trainees will perform a multicolor panel experiment using best practices in analytic cytometry, experiment design and analysis. Trainees have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to receive a digital credential through UCI.
Learn the basics of HPLC operation and acquire valuable laboratory skills that prepare you for basic research in the pharmaceutical and synthetic biology sectors. Trainees will complete hands-on, problem-based challenges where they will apply classroom knowledge in a HPLC laboratory setting. Trainees will learn how to solubilize pharmaceuticals, create quantitative concentration curves and prepare samples from complex biological mixtures. Trainees have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to receive a digital credential through UCI.
Prerequisite: Molecular Biology 1
This 8-week hybrid course provides hands-on training with industry-standard knowledge and skills in qPCR, protein purification, quantification, experimental design and execution. Participants will learn the best practices in the standard molecular biology techniques performed in biomanufacturing, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology laboratories.
Prerequisite: Molecular Biology 2
Students will learn cell culture and molecular biology techniques that are performed in research and development immuno-oncology laboratories. Students will acquire vital research skills and learn how biotechnology laboratories harness the surveillance mechanisms of immune cells to create cancer therapeutics.
This 8-week internship equips students with vital workplace skills in a biotech setting. Students will learn laboratory operations, effective communication, and engage with multidisciplinary scientists. Students will have the opportunity to earn a UCI digital credential in the Fundamentals of Cell Culture.
This 6-month career exploration program will provide fellows with a deep understanding of the different career opportunities in the thriving life science industry. Fellows will participate in a variety of events including professional development trainings with industry professionals, networking events, industry tours, and 1:1 meetings with carefully matched mentors.
