Summer program for talented high school and undergraduate students with a deep interest in pursuing careers in medicine and the life sciences.

Learn technicals skills in biomedical research

Students will learn cell culture and molecular biology techniques that are performed in research and development immuno-oncology laboratories. Students will acquire vital research skills and learn how biotechnology laboratories harness the surveillance mechanisms of immune cells to create cancer therapeutics.

Student must have taken Molecular Biology 1 (previously Genome Engineering) @ ULP or apply for a prerequisite waiver.

Students can choose between 3 cohorts.

ULP will be reviewing applications and sending email notifications of acceptance on a rolling basis.

What is the tuition for the program?

ULP has full and partial scholarships for the Summer Research Experience. All students are considered for merit-based scholarships at the time of application. There is no application process. ULP will notify scholarship recipients at the time of acceptance.

What are the prerequisites?
  • Students must have taken Molecular Biology 1 (previously Genome Engineering) @ ULP or apply for a prerequisite waiver on the application.
  • Undergraduate and high school students with a deep interest in pursuing academic research opportunities and/or careers in biotechnology.
  • Students must be entering high school by Fall 2024.
What will I learn?

Students will learn cell culture and molecular biology techniques that are performed in research and development immuno-oncology laboratories. Students will acquire vital research skills and learn how biotechnology laboratories harness the surveillance mechanisms of immune cells to create cancer therapeutics. This program will also teach students how to research and read scientific papers, how to design experiments, and how to display and discuss their findings.

Who is the program taught by?

The program is taught by Samantha Renusch, Educational Program Manager of University Lab Partners.

Samantha has worked as a Research Scientist at NKGen Biotech and has spent 2+ years in cutting-edge industry research and development laboratories. Samantha has also spent extensive time as a Laboratory Manager on UCI's campus teaching and mentoring undergraduate/graduate students. 

Samantha holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UCI.
