When Technology Fails, Innovation Must Prevail

Makani Science:
Better Breathing,
Better Health

Makani Science's singular mission: to engineer a revolutionary, small wearable device that vigilantly monitors breathing and catches what current systems overlook. When Dr. Michelle Khine's son was born with a collapsed lung, he was held in the NICU, attached to wires and monitors, unable to be close to his mother. She was left wondering how the technology had failed to detect a collapsed lung. From there, the University of California, Irvine, biomedical professor took a stand to build a better respiratory monitor alongside her former doctoral student, Dr. Michael Chu.
